Cheorwon Hantan River Sky Observation Deck

it is called the Hantan River Columnar Joint Road in Cheorwon, Korea. This trail consists of gallery roads on the riverside cliffs along the river. Many of you may know them as gallery roads, a type of cliff-hanging access road. Some of you might have experienced walking on the gallery roads while sightseeing or trekking in mainland China. The gallery road is a kind of a cliff road or a plank road, which you're going to walk on for the next hour or so. You are inside Hantangang UNESCO Global Geopark, which is the very first geopark focused on a river in Korea. The river begins at Jangamsan Mountain in Pyeonggang County, North Korea and meets together with the Imjin River downstream. The whole Hantan River and some of the Imjin River were formed with volcanic eruptions between 540,000 and 120,000 years ago. The lava ran through old channels, later developing various interesting volcanic shapes such as basaltic gorges, columnar joints, and waterfalls. Located in the central part of the Korean Peninsula, this particular geopark was added to the list by UNESCO back in July, 2020 for its valuable geological, ecological, historic, and cultural heritage. You can probably recognize the blue UNESCO logo on the map. Hantangang UNESCO Global Geopark is the fourth designated in Korea after Jeju Island, Cheongsong, and Mudeungsan Mountain. Not only are the citizens of Cheorwon proud of this but all Koreans throughout the country are proud of our Geoparks.
