Maewoldang teacher Kim Si-Seop, one of Saeng-yuksin (six living ministers), and eight righteous scholars abandoned their government posts and lived in seclusion in a mountainous village around the area of Maewoldae Cliff because they felt indignation due to Grand Prince Suyang. This refers to a 40-meter high stratified rock cliff (also known as Seonam) located at the top of the mountain at 595 meters above sea level at the foothill of Bokgyesan Mountain. Legend has it that the nine scholars carved a go board on this bedrock and tried to restore King Danjong while playing the game of go. Since then, people have called this rock Maewoldae, taking advantage of the pen-name of Kim Si-Seop. Maewoldae Falls are located about 1 kilometer east from the summit of Maewoldae Cliff, making it a spectacular attraction in all four seasons.
